Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says Jamaica remains committed to maritime safety, security, efficiency and sustainability as the country marks World Maritime Day.

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica is reaffirming its commitment to building a safe, secure, resilient, efficient and sustainable maritime sector, with Transport Minister Daryl Vaz highlighting the industry’s importance to national development and international trade.

Vaz’s message, delivered in connection with World Maritime Day, places maritime standards and sustainability at the centre of Jamaica’s ambitions for the sector.

Maritime Sector Central to Trade

As an island state, Jamaica depends heavily on maritime transportation for the movement of goods and its connection to international markets.

That makes the safety, reliability and efficiency of the sector important not only to shipping companies and ports, but to businesses and consumers across the economy.

Vaz’s message reinforces the Government’s position that maritime development must be accompanied by strong standards and resilient systems.

Safety, Security and Sustainability

The Minister identified safety, security, resilience, efficiency and sustainability as core priorities for Jamaica’s maritime sector.

Those priorities reflect the range of pressures facing modern shipping, including operational safety, environmental responsibilities and the need for infrastructure and institutions capable of adapting to disruption.

Jamaica’s maritime ambitions also operate within an international regulatory environment in which countries are expected to implement global shipping standards through national institutions.

Turning Maritime Commitments Into Practice

The Government’s emphasis on maritime excellence complements the work of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, which has stressed the importance of translating international commitments into practical outcomes for the country’s shipping sector.

That includes maintaining regulatory standards while positioning Jamaica to benefit from its location, ports, shipping activity and maritime workforce.

The approach goes beyond increasing shipping activity. It also places attention on the quality, safety and sustainability of the systems supporting the sector.

A Long-Term Maritime Development Agenda

Jamaica’s location in the Caribbean gives the country a strategic interest in shipping and maritime services.

Vaz’s World Maritime Day message frames maritime excellence as a continuing national objective requiring regulatory oversight, skilled personnel, modern infrastructure and adherence to international standards.

For Jamaica, the challenge will be to convert that commitment into measurable improvements in maritime safety, sustainability, resilience and economic opportunity.
