Black History Month 2026: Liberal Caucus Celebrates 30 Years of Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations

From Black Youth Leadership to Entrepreneurship and AI, Canada’s Federal Leaders Spotlight Equity and Excellence

OTTAWA, ON — In celebration of Black History Month 2026, the Liberal Caucus hosted a series of nationwide events from February 3rd to 5th, embracing the year’s theme: “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.”

The week-long program amplified the voices of Black Canadians from across sectors including youth advocacy, business, finance, artificial intelligence, and the arts — reaffirming the federal government’s commitment to equity, economic empowerment, and cultural recognition.

Empowering Black Youth Voices

The celebrations began with a roundtable discussion hosted by the Liberal Youth Caucus, with Members of Parliament including Tatiana Auguste, Al Soud, and Amarjeet Sohi joining Parliamentary Secretary Jenna Church. The dialogue focused on barriers facing Black youth, access to funding, and the provincial Black Youth Action Plan (BYAP), which continues to increase opportunity for Ontario’s Black communities since its 2018 launch.

Investing in Black Entrepreneurship

On February 3rd, Minister Rechie Valdez, joined by MPs Auguste and Michael Coteau, led a powerful discussion with Black entrepreneurs and business leaders. The conversation spotlighted the renewed Black Entrepreneurship Program (BEP) and its $189 million federal investment to support Black-owned businesses.

Since 2021, the BEP has already supported over 24,000 Black entrepreneurs, with $70 million approved through the Loan Fund alone. “Black-owned businesses are key drivers of Canada’s economy,” said Minister Valdez, “and our commitment to their success is long-term.”

Addressing Financial Equity

In a separate session, Parliamentary Secretary Peter Fragiskatos and MP Auguste met with Black professionals in the finance sector to discuss how federal policy can better address barriers and foster inclusive economic growth. Stakeholders emphasized the importance of equitable access to capital and responsive fiscal planning that acknowledges systemic challenges.

Networking for Change

On February 4th, MPs Greg Fergus and Tatiana Auguste hosted the annual Black History Month Networking Reception in Ottawa, welcoming parliamentarians, government officials, and community leaders. The event celebrated Black excellence across public service and honoured Canada’s trailblazing changemakers — from grassroots organizers to national leaders.

Official Black History Month Celebration

Minister Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture, hosted the government’s 2026 Official Black History Month Celebration alongside Prime Minister Mark Carney. The event featured spoken word, cultural performances, and a call to action from the Prime Minister to continue empowering Black Canadians across all walks of life.

Black Leadership in AI & Innovation

On February 5th, Minister Evan Solomon, along with Minister Arielle Kayabaga and MP Tatiana Auguste, led a dialogue with Black leaders in artificial intelligence. Conversations focused on hiring equity, digital rights, and inclusive AI policy development. Stakeholders shared interest in shaping Canada’s forthcoming AI policy reports and ensuring Black voices remain central.

Supporting Black Artists Across Regions

The celebrations concluded with a roundtable on February 5th hosted by Minister Marc Miller and MPs Auguste, Joseph, and Ntumba. The session focused on breaking regional barriers and increasing access to federal funding for Black artists — emphasizing the role of culture in shaping Canada’s national identity.

Canada’s celebration of 30 years of Black History Month affirms that the road to inclusion and empowerment is ongoing. As conversations continue, the federal government signaled its enduring support for a Canada where Black excellence is not just celebrated — it is empowered to thrive.
