Black Students Gain Legal Pathways Through LAWS Program Initiative

TORONTO, ON— The Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC) is continuing its collaboration with Law in Action Within Schools (LAWS), an initiative designed to support high school students facing barriers to postsecondary education while introducing them to the legal profession.

The program, which is underway again this summer, focuses on equipping students with the knowledge, mentorship, and practical experience needed to explore careers in law and related fields.

Building Pathways Into the Legal Profession

LAWS provides students with opportunities to engage directly with the justice system through:

  • Interactive workshops focused on legal concepts and critical thinking
  • Mentorship from legal professionals
  • Employment opportunities that offer real-world exposure

The initiative aims to bridge gaps in access to education and professional networks, particularly for students who may not otherwise have pathways into legal careers.

Supporting the Next Generation

BLAC’s continued involvement reflects a broader commitment to expanding opportunities for youth, particularly those from underserved communities.

By partnering with programs like LAWS, BLAC helps create environments where students can build confidence, develop skills, and gain a clearer understanding of how the legal system operates.

Expanding Access Through Education

Programs such as LAWS play a key role in addressing systemic barriers within the education and justice systems. By connecting students with mentors and practical experiences, the initiative supports long-term goals of increasing diversity and representation within the legal profession.

As the program continues through the summer, organizers say the focus remains on empowering students to pursue their ambitions while strengthening access to education and career opportunities.
