Canada-Guyana Relations Focus on Trade and Growth

TORONTO, ON — Mark Carney met with Mohamed Irfaan Ali in Toronto on Friday, as Canada and Guyana continued discussions on expanding economic cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the leaders highlighted the longstanding relationship between the two countries, noting the contributions of more than 100,000 Canadians of Guyanese ancestry living across Canada.

Guyana remains one of Canada’s largest trading partners within the Caribbean Community.


Focus on Trade and Investment

During the meeting, Prime Minister Carney and President Ali discussed opportunities to deepen economic collaboration in sectors including:

  • Energy
  • Technology
  • Agriculture
  • Mining

The leaders also emphasized Canada’s role as a reliable trade and investment partner as Guyana continues its rapid economic growth and development.

Guyana has emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies in the Caribbean region in recent years, attracting increasing international investment interest.



Canada-Guyana Chamber of Commerce Forum

Prime Minister Carney also extended best wishes for the Canada-Guyana Chamber of Commerce Business Forum, taking place in Toronto this week.

The forum is marking:

  • 60 years of Guyana’s independence
  • 60 years of diplomatic relations between Canada and Guyana

The event is expected to bring together business leaders, investors, and members of the Guyanese diaspora to discuss economic partnerships and future opportunities.


Strengthening Bilateral Relations

The Prime Minister’s Office said the leaders agreed to remain in close contact moving forward.

Prime Minister Carney also expressed interest in visiting Guyana in the future, signaling continued engagement between the two countries.

The meeting reflects Canada’s ongoing diplomatic and economic relationship with Caribbean nations and the growing importance of diaspora communities in strengthening regional partnerships.
