Jamaica and Ghana Strengthen Bilateral Ties During High-Level Meeting in Accra

ACCRA, GHANA — Jamaica and Ghana are continuing efforts to deepen diplomatic and development cooperation following high-level meetings between Jamaican officials and Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama in Accra.
According to Jamaica’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith met with President Mahama during a courtesy call aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
During the meeting, Johnson Smith conveyed greetings on behalf of the Government of Jamaica and expressed appreciation for Ghana’s support following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.
Ghana Engineering Corps Assisted Hurricane Recovery Efforts
The Jamaican minister thanked the Government of Ghana for deploying members of the Ghana Engineering Corps, who worked alongside the Jamaica Defence Force to assist with reconstruction efforts after the hurricane.
According to the ministry, the joint initiative helped rebuild roofs damaged during the storm and provided assistance to nearly 100 families severely impacted by Hurricane Melissa.
The reconstruction work was described as a significant example of international cooperation and solidarity between African and Caribbean nations.
Expanding Jamaica–Ghana Cooperation
The visit also included bilateral engagements with Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, focusing on areas of mutual interest between both countries.
Officials said the discussions reflected Jamaica’s commitment to expanding partnerships with Ghana through diplomatic, economic, and development cooperation.
Johnson Smith was accompanied by Jamaica’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Lincoln Downer, and Jamaica’s Honorary Consul to Ghana, Okatakyie Boakye Danquah Ababio.
She also conveyed gratitude, in-person, to the President for the deployment of the Ghana Engineering Corps who worked shoulder to shoulder with the Jamaica Defence Force in the reconstruction of roofs destroyed by Hurricane Melissa.
