Tina Nalova Cameroonian Canadian filmmaker wins for her debut short film at TINFF@10 in Toronto

TORONTO, ON — Cameroonian-Canadian filmmaker Tina Nalova has won Best First Short Film at the 10th Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival for her debut short film, Till Truth Do Us Part.

Nalova wrote, directed, produced and edited the psychological thriller and also stars in the film opposite Oluwatoyese Akinsoji. The award places her first film among the projects recognized during TINFF@10, held in Toronto from September 4 to 12.

From Yaoundé to Toronto

Nalova’s filmmaking journey reaches back to her teenage years in Yaoundé, Cameroon, where she began writing screenplays by hand before later building a creative career in Canada.

Her debut brings together several parts of her multidisciplinary practice. In addition to filmmaking, Nalova has worked across poetry and journalism, while her film work is drawn toward thrillers and psychological narratives exploring relationships, betrayal and power.

A Multi-Hyphenate Debut

With Till Truth Do Us Part, Nalova took on responsibilities on both sides of the camera, serving as writer, director, producer, editor and lead performer.

The Best First Short Film recognition gives the Cameroonian-Canadian filmmaker an early milestone as she develops her body of work from Toronto.

The Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival marked its 10th anniversary this year. The festival describes its mandate as celebrating diverse cinema with a particular focus on Nollywood and global storytelling.

Nalova’s award connects that international platform with a Canadian filmmaking story rooted in Cameroon and developed in Toronto.
