Honda USA Foundation Launches $10 Million Drive the Legacy Fund for HBCUs

Honda Drive the Legacy Fund will support HBCU infrastructure, technology and institutional capacity through a new long-term endowment

TORRANCE, Calif. — The Honda USA Foundation has created a $10 million Drive the Legacy Fund designed to provide long-term support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The endowment expands Honda’s nearly four-decade relationship with HBCUs and will focus on institutional needs including infrastructure, technology and operational capacity.

Investing in HBCU Infrastructure and Technology

Honda said the fund was developed after stakeholder engagement, research and institutional needs assessments identified recurring challenges including underfunding, aging facilities, technology infrastructure gaps and faculty recruitment and retention.

The fund will support two main categories: Infrastructure & Technology and Institutional Capacity.

Infrastructure and technology projects can include facility repairs and modernization, digital systems and connectivity, cybersecurity and smart-campus technologies. Institutional capacity funding can support faculty recruitment and retention, professional development and administrative and operational improvements.

Grants of Up to $250,000 Annually

Institutional grants are expected to range from $100,000 to $250,000 annually, with awards available for up to two years.

The first phase will focus on accredited four-year HBCUs in states where Honda has major operations and a strong community presence.

The competitive process is scheduled to begin in March 2027 with a Letter of Intent process. Selected institutions will then be invited to submit full grant applications.

Nearly Four Decades of HBCU Support

Honda’s HBCU work includes programs such as the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge and Honda Battle of the Bands.

The company says its HBCU initiatives have reached more than 350,000 students and provided more than $16 million in grants supporting education programs and facilities.

The new Drive the Legacy Fund shifts additional resources toward the institutional systems and infrastructure that support HBCU campuses over the long term.
