30 Years of Black Canadian Brilliance: Mark Carney Leads National Reflection
Gatineau, Quebec – Canada’s official Black History Month 2026 celebration was held on February 4 at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, led by the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture. The event commemorated 30 years since the federal government first recognized Black History Month, shining a spotlight on Black Canadian excellence past, present, and future.
Held under the theme “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries,” the ceremony brought together political leaders, cultural contributors, and community advocates from across the country.
Prime Minister Carney Celebrates Legacy and Leadership
In his keynote remarks, Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged the historic role played by Dr. Jean Augustine, the first Black woman elected to Canada’s Parliament, who introduced the motion in 1995 to formally recognize Black History Month nationwide.
“Dr. Augustine’s motion helped bring long-overdue recognition to the contributions Black Canadians have made for centuries,” said Prime Minister Carney. “From building this country’s railroads to shaping its cultural and political life, Black Canadians have always been part of Canada’s story — not just in February, but every month of the year.”
The Prime Minister also addressed Canada’s commitment to advancing equity, highlighting government initiatives such as the renewed Black Entrepreneurship Program, which includes $190 million in funding to support Black-owned businesses through access to capital, mentorship, and growth opportunities.
The history of Black Canadians is one of relentless progress, earned through perseverance, and carried forward by opening doors for so many to follow.

Tackling Present-Day Barriers
Carney’s address did not shy away from present-day challenges. He noted persistent disparities in economic opportunity and food security, especially in racialized communities.
To respond, he cited the government’s recently expanded Canada Groceries and Essential Benefit, aimed at easing affordability pressures for low- and modest-income Canadians, including many Black households.
“This work — to deliver for all Canadians — is far from done. But together, we are building a Canada where every generation of Black brilliance can thrive,” he said.
Honouring Cultural and Political Milestones
Throughout the evening, attendees enjoyed live performances, spoken word, and musical tributes that reflected the diversity of Canada’s Black communities — from African and Caribbean cultures to Afro-Indigenous voices.
Minister Marc Miller praised the event’s intergenerational focus: “This year’s celebration is about honouring the legacy of Black Canadian leaders while uplifting new voices who are shaping our future — in politics, the arts, science, and every field imaginable.”
As part of the ongoing observance, federal departments will continue hosting Black History Month programming throughout February, featuring educational campaigns, panel discussions, and community outreach events across the country.
A Call to Remember and Build Forward
As Black History Month 2026 continues, Prime Minister Carney left attendees with a call to both remembrance and action.
“We honour the past by investing in the future,” he said. “We remember Viola Desmond and Lincoln Alexander — and we lift up every young Black Canadian dreaming of what’s possible. Because their story is Canada’s story, too.”
