Black Canadian Brilliance in Business Receives Boost from Renewed Federal Commitment

Ottawa — In a powerful show of support during Black History Month, the Honourable Rechie Valdez, Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State (Small Business and Tourism), reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to economic inclusion by announcing the renewed funding of the Black Entrepreneurship Program.

A Renewed Investment in Black Entrepreneurship

With a renewed investment of $189 million, the Government of Canada is doubling down on its efforts to empower Black entrepreneurs nationwide. This investment marks a major milestone in the program’s journey since its 2021 launch. Already, more than 24,000 Black entrepreneurs have accessed training, mentorship, and financial support.

“Black entrepreneurs are building businesses, creating jobs and driving innovation in communities across Canada,” said Minister Valdez in her official statement. “Their success strengthens our economy and helps position Canada for long-term growth.”

Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund Hits Major Milestone

A major pillar of the initiative is the Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund, which has already approved over $70 million in financing across 800+ loans. These funds are helping entrepreneurs launch, expand, and compete in an evolving global marketplace.

The program’s reach is not just economic — it is also intersectional. Specific emphasis has been placed on addressing systemic challenges faced by Black women and 2SLGBTQI+ entrepreneurs, who often encounter compounded barriers when accessing capital and growth opportunities.

Driving Inclusive Growth Across Canada

By confronting long-standing systemic inequities, the Black Entrepreneurship Program is creating more equitable pathways into Canada’s innovation economy. From tech startups to storefront businesses, this support has helped Black-owned enterprises grow in ways that enrich communities and fuel long-term prosperity.

Minister Valdez emphasized that the initiative remains a crucial part of the government’s larger commitment to an inclusive economy:

“As we work to grow Canada’s economy and diversify our markets in a changing global landscape, we are ensuring that Black entrepreneurs have the tools they need to compete, scale and succeed.”

A Vision for the Future

The federal government’s renewed investment signals that Black Canadian entrepreneurs will remain a key part of the country’s economic vision moving forward. With mentorship, training, and capital support now more accessible, the program is expected to continue driving innovation and job creation in underserved communities.

As Black History Month 2026 unfolds under the national theme of “Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations,” the government’s message is clear: when Black entrepreneurs thrive, Canada thrives.
