International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination Canada commitments outlined

OTTAWA  — The federal government is reaffirming its commitment to addressing systemic racism and promoting equity as Canada marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

In an official statement released Saturday, Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, emphasized the need to build a more inclusive society where racialized individuals are free from discrimination.

“As we mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, we reiterate our commitment to building a fair and equitable world in which every racialized person in Canada need not fear discrimination or prejudice because of their ethnic origins, skin colour, language or religion,” Miller stated.

Federal Investments Target Systemic Inequality

The minister pointed to the federal government’s Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy, launched in 2024, as a cornerstone initiative aimed at addressing inequalities across multiple sectors. The strategy includes an investment of $110.4 million to support community-based programs and targeted actions in areas such as employment, justice, health care, and immigration.

In addition, the government continues to advance its broader Action Plan to Combat Hate, backed by $273.6 million in funding. The plan focuses on improving safety for racialized communities, particularly in schools, places of worship, and community spaces.

Advisory Council to Guide National Efforts

Miller also highlighted the creation of a federal advisory council on rights, equality, and inclusion, announced in February. The council is intended to bring together voices from across communities to help guide policy decisions and strengthen national efforts to combat racism and hate.

Acknowledging Ongoing Challenges

Despite these initiatives, the minister acknowledged that significant work remains. The statement underscored the continued challenges faced by Indigenous Peoples, racialized communities, and religious minorities across Canada.

“On this International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, let’s choose to go further, do more and do better. Together, let’s build a country where dignity, safety and equal opportunity are not just ideals, but a reality for all,” Miller said.

National Reflection and Call to Action

Observed annually on March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination serves as a global reminder of the need to confront racism and promote equality. In Canada, the day continues to be marked by government commitments, community initiatives, and public dialogue aimed at advancing inclusion and social justice.
