Rita Dominic TIFF 2026 brought the acclaimed Nigerian actress to Toronto for the world premiere of The Spectacular Death of Prisca and an exclusive interview with Vision Newspaper
TORONTO, ON — Nigerian actress and producer Rita Dominic was in Toronto during the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival as The Spectacular Death of Prisca, a new short film starring Dominic in the title role, made its world premiere in TIFF’s Short Cuts programme.
Directed by Nigerian-American filmmaker Kaelo Iyizoba, the 23-minute drama-comedy draws inspiration from the heightened style and visual language of Old Nollywood. Dominic stars as Prisca and also serves as an executive producer. The cast includes Genoveva Umeh, Fae Olumide, Shamz Garuba, Amaka Ukuta and Kenzy Udosen.
TIFF Spotlight for a Nollywood Story
The film follows a mother who, on her daughter’s wedding day, is transported into the world of an Old Nollywood film and forced to confront fears surrounding motherhood and losing her daughter. Its TIFF selection placed a distinctly Nigerian cinematic reference point before an international festival audience in Toronto.
Iyizoba has described the project as a proof of concept for a planned feature, A Nollywood Story. In interviews surrounding the TIFF premiere, he said the film was shaped by the Nollywood movies he grew up watching.
Dominic’s participation also carries a connection to an earlier chapter of TIFF’s engagement with Nigerian cinema. In 2016, she attended the festival for the world premiere of 76, in which she starred, during TIFF’s City to City spotlight on Lagos.
