Queen Latifah Says Her Biopic May Need Multiple Actresses to Tell Her Story

Queen Latifah biopic plans include an upcoming open casting call, with the hip-hop pioneer saying multiple performers may be needed to portray different stages of her life and career.

Queen Latifah says the search to portray her on screen may require more than one actress as development continues on the planned film about her life.

The rapper, actor, singer and producer, born Dana Owens, said an open casting call is being planned and acknowledged the challenge of finding a performer capable of representing the different stages and dimensions of her career.

A Life Spanning Hip Hop, Film and Television

The casting challenge reflects the breadth of Latifah’s story. She emerged from hip hop in the late 1980s, became one of rap’s pioneering women and expanded into acting, television, jazz and producing.

Her screen career has included Living Single, Chicago, Set It Off, Bringing Down the House and The Equalizer, while her music career helped establish a path for women seeking both commercial success and authority within hip hop.

An Open Casting Search Is Coming

Latifah has suggested that different actresses could potentially portray different periods of her life rather than asking one performer to cover the entire arc.

The planned open call could also widen the search beyond established Hollywood names.

The biopic is positioned to document not only Latifah’s individual career but several decades of change in hip hop, Black television and Hollywood. Casting details, production dates and a release schedule remain to be announced.
