AGO Expands Sunday Best Exhibition With Black Fashion, Toronto Designers and Opening Celebration

Sunday Best Exhibition brings Black fashion, art and Toronto designers together at the AGO
TORONTO, ON — The Art Gallery of Ontario is preparing for the world debut of Sunday Best: The Power & The Glory of Black Style, an exhibition tracing Black self-fashioning from the 1880s to the present through fashion, photography, painting, accessories and time-based media.
AGO members can begin viewing the exhibition October 7, Annual Passholders gain access October 9 at 5 p.m., and the exhibition opens to the general public October 13. It remains on view in Toronto through February 28, 2027.
Black Style Across Generations
Sunday Best brings together more than 50 garments alongside photographs, paintings and other works from public and private collections across North America, the United Kingdom, Europe and the Caribbean.
The exhibition is conceived and curated by Dr. Julie Crooks and Dr. Jason Cyrus, with Amanda Bock and Clare Sauro. It is organized by the AGO and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Opening Celebration Brings Fashion to Walker Court
On October 16, the AGO will host a one-night opening celebration featuring a live runway show by Canadian label Greta Constantine and a performance by Echo Collective, led by creative producer and vocalist Kiara Lauren Picart.
The museum is also bringing Toronto designers into the wider program. Capsule collections from Spencer Badu, Colette Harmon and Omi Woods are scheduled for the AGO shop beginning October 6.
Programming Extends Beyond the Gallery
Additional events include an October 17 teacher workshop focused on Black creativity, an Art of Crochet and Jazz event with Legin Knits on November 6 and a Viola Desmond Day film screening at TIFF Lightbox on November 8.
On November 18, designers Rachel Scott, Christopher John Rogers and Kirk Pickersgill are scheduled to join Suzanne Boyd for a conversation on Black style and design.
The exhibition will travel to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2027 following its Toronto presentation.
