Black Legal Professionals and Equity in Courthouse Spaces

DURHAM REGION, ON — The Black Legal Action Centre (BLAC) has engaged in discussions with Durham Regional Police leadership to address the experiences of racialized lawyers working within courthouse environments across the region.

The meeting brought together several legal and advocacy organizations, including the Black Female Lawyers Network, Canadian Association of Black Lawyers, Criminal Lawyers’ Association, Durham Region Law Association, and the Ontario Association of Black Paralegals, creating a collaborative forum to raise concerns and explore solutions.


Focus on Security Practices and Workplace Conditions

Discussions centred on courthouse security practices, including access procedures, identification protocols, and interactions between police officers and legal professionals.

Participants also highlighted broader concerns related to:

  • Consistency in security enforcement
  • Communication between courthouse staff and legal professionals
  • The overall experiences of racialized lawyers within courthouse settings

The meeting emphasized that courthouses are not only public institutions but also workplaces for lawyers and legal professionals, requiring standards that ensure fairness, professionalism, and respect.


Reflecting Community Diversity

The conversation comes within the context of Durham Region’s diverse population. In Ajax, where 16.8% of residents identified as Black in the 2021 Census, advocates stressed the importance of ensuring that courthouse environments reflect and respect the communities they serve.

Ensuring that Black legal professionals feel safe and are treated equitably is seen as a key component of building trust in the justice system.


A Step Toward Ongoing Dialogue

BLAC described the meeting as an important step toward ongoing dialogue and collaboration between legal organizations and law enforcement.

While no immediate policy changes were announced, participants signaled a shared commitment to improving courthouse experiences and addressing systemic concerns raised by racialized lawyers.

The engagement highlights a growing focus on equity within justice system institutions, as stakeholders work to ensure that professional environments are inclusive for all participants.
