Colin Kaepernick Jay-Z comments have revived debate over Roc Nation’s NFL partnership, with the former quarterback alleging the company planted negative stories after he opposed the 2019 deal.

Colin Kaepernick has renewed his criticism of Jay-Z’s relationship with the NFL, reviving one of the most contentious intersections of hip hop, sports and protest politics during a press run for his memoir, The Perilous Fight.

In recent interviews, Kaepernick revisited a 2019 conversation with Jay-Z shortly before the NFL announced its partnership with Roc Nation. Kaepernick said he told Jay-Z that he disagreed with the arrangement.

Kaepernick Alleges Negative Stories Were Pitched

Kaepernick has also alleged that journalists later contacted his team about negative stories they said had been pitched by Roc Nation after he opposed the NFL partnership.

No publicly identified reporter has established that allegation, and publicly available evidence has not independently proved that Roc Nation planted negative stories. Roc Nation did not respond to an NPR request for comment cited in reporting on Kaepernick’s allegation.

Why the 2019 Partnership Remains Contested

The NFL announced its partnership with Roc Nation in August 2019, giving Jay-Z’s company a role in live entertainment and the league’s social-justice initiative.

At the time, Jay-Z argued that the conversation needed to move beyond kneeling and toward concrete action. Critics, including Kaepernick and supporters of his protest, questioned the partnership while Kaepernick remained unsigned by an NFL team.

Hip Hop Reenters the Conversation

The renewed comments have again placed Jay-Z’s role in the NFL relationship under scrutiny within hip-hop media and on social platforms.

The dispute is not simply about two prominent public figures. It reflects a larger disagreement over whether working with powerful institutions can produce meaningful change or risks weakening protest from outside those institutions.

Kaepernick’s latest allegations remain allegations. The documented facts are that Roc Nation entered the NFL partnership in 2019, Kaepernick opposed it, and he is now publicly revisiting that disagreement during his 2026 memoir campaign.
