Future of STEM Scholars Initiative Opens Applications for 2027 HBCU Scholars

FOSSI 2027 applications offer eligible students four-year scholarships, mentorship and career development tied to the chemical industry

WASHINGTON — The Future of STEM Scholars Initiative has opened applications for its 2027 class, continuing a scholarship program that connects students pursuing STEM degrees at Historically Black Colleges and Universities with financial support, mentoring, internships and career development.

The program is open to high school seniors planning to pursue industry-relevant STEM degrees at HBCUs and who have an interest in careers in the chemical industry. Applications will be accepted through January 8, 2027.

Four Years of Scholarship Support

Each FOSSI scholar receives $10,000 per year for four years, along with access to leadership development, mentoring, internship opportunities and networking with sponsoring companies.

Founded in 2020 by the American Chemistry Council, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Chemours and the HBCU Week Foundation, FOSSI says it has funded more than 900 scholarships, raised more than $40 million and supported students attending more than 40 HBCUs.

Building a STEM Workforce

The initiative is designed to connect HBCU students with pathways into the chemical industry while supporting them through college.

“One of the most rewarding parts of FOSSI is seeing talented young people gain the confidence, support, and opportunities they need to pursue their ambitions,” said Mark Costa, chair of the FOSSI Advisory Board and chairman and CEO of Eastman Chemical Company.

FOSSI reported that nearly 80 percent of graduates from its first graduating classes are either employed full-time in STEM-related fields or pursuing graduate education.

Students Look Toward the Future

The program is also welcoming its newest scholar class, whose members began their college studies this year and are expected to graduate in 2030.

“My dream is to be able to conduct and pioneer research in the chemical field. This dream was made that much more possible by FOSSI,” said Samiya Miller, a FOSSI scholar attending North Carolina A&T State University.

The 2027 application period gives another group of students preparing for HBCU STEM programs an opportunity to compete for the four-year scholarship and accompanying professional development.
