KINGSTON, JAMAICA – Jamaica has officially honoured former Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller by naming the headquarters of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security after her in recognition of her decades of public service and contribution to national development.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced the dedication on Tuesday, describing the gesture as a fitting tribute to one of Jamaica’s most influential political leaders.
The facility will now officially be known as the Portia Simpson Miller Building.
“This afternoon, we recognised and honoured the enduring service and contribution of The Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller with the official naming of the Ministry of Labour and Social Security headquarters as the Portia Simpson Miller Building,” Holness stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Recognising a Historic Political Career
Holness highlighted Simpson Miller’s longstanding service to Jamaica, including her work as Minister of Labour and Jamaica’s first female Prime Minister.
“Mrs. Simpson Miller dedicated many years of public service to the advancement of Jamaican workers, families, and communities,” the Prime Minister said.
Simpson Miller served in multiple leadership roles throughout her political career and became Jamaica’s first woman Prime Minister in 2006. She later returned to the office in 2012.
Her political legacy has often been associated with advocacy for working-class Jamaicans, labour rights, and social development programmes.

Lasting Impact on Labour and Social Welfare
According to Holness, Simpson Miller played a significant role in strengthening labour relations and expanding Jamaica’s social protection systems.
“As Minister of Labour, former Prime Minister of Jamaica, and Jamaica’s first woman Prime Minister, she helped strengthen labour relations, social welfare, and social protection systems that continue to support the Jamaican people today,” he stated.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Security remains one of the country’s key government institutions responsible for labour policy, employment services, and welfare programmes.
Tribute to a National Figure
Holness described the naming ceremony as recognition of a leader whose influence extended beyond politics into national development and public life.
“This dedication is a fitting tribute to a leader whose commitment to service has left a lasting mark on our nation’s development and public life,” he added.
The honour reflects Simpson Miller’s enduring place in Jamaica’s political history and her role as a trailblazer for women in leadership.
