Jhené Aiko Reunites With Kendrick Lamar on Westside Whimsy

Jhené Aiko Westside Whimsy marks the R&B singer’s first studio album in six years and reconnects her with Kendrick Lamar on “So Good” nearly 13 years after their earlier collaborations.

Jhené Aiko has returned with Westside Whimsy, her fourth studio album and first full-length studio project in six years, bringing Kendrick Lamar back into her musical orbit in the process.

Released September 11 through Def Jam and ArtClub, the 20-track project features Lamar on “So Good,” renewing a creative relationship that reaches back to the early stages of both artists’ mainstream careers.

Aiko and Lamar previously appeared together on music including “Growing Apart (To Get Closer),” associated with Lamar’s Overly Dedicated era, and “Stay Ready (What A Life)” from Aiko’s 2013 EP Sail Out. Their appearance together on Westside Whimsy therefore carries a sense of history for listeners who followed the Los Angeles artists before they became global stars.

The new album is also significant because of the length of Aiko’s absence from the studio-album format. Her previous full-length, Chilombo, arrived in 2020 and became one of the defining commercial releases of her career.

Westside Whimsy returns with a substantial 20-song track list rather than a brief comeback project.

A California-Focused Guest List

Kendrick is not the album’s only guest. Ab-Soul appears on “Love Bomb,” Tyga joins “Like, Whatever,” Larry June features on “Neighbors,” and OHMA appears on “Golden Coast.”

The guest list reinforces the album’s California identity. The project draws inspiration from 1990s music as well as the state’s car, surf, beach and road-trip culture.

That setting is especially appropriate for Aiko, whose music has long combined atmospheric R&B, introspective writing and a distinctly West Coast sensibility. The Kendrick Lamar collaboration connects that sound to another branch of contemporary Los Angeles music.

The timing also places both artists in very different positions from their earlier collaborations. Aiko is now a veteran R&B artist with multiple major projects behind her, while Lamar has become one of the most decorated rappers of his generation.

A Reunion Nearly 13 Years in the Making

“So Good” therefore works on two levels: as a new album cut and as a reunion between artists whose shared history predates much of their biggest commercial success.

For Aiko, however, the larger story is the album itself. After six years without a new studio LP, Westside Whimsy gives her listeners a full-length return built around California imagery, longtime collaborators and a broader musical world rather than a single comeback moment.
