Cuban President congratulates Xi Jinping and the Chinese people while highlighting Beijing’s support for Cuba and the longstanding relationship between the two countries.
HAVANA, Cuba — Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel marked the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China with a message to President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people, highlighting the longstanding political and diplomatic relationship between Havana and Beijing.
Díaz-Canel published the message on October 1, just days after Cuba and China marked 66 years of diplomatic relations.
Congratulations to China
“On the occasion of the 77th anniversary of the foundation of the People’s Republic of China, we extend our warm congratulations to Comrade Xi Jinping, to the Party, to the Government, and to the Chinese people,” Díaz-Canel wrote in a translated version of his Spanish-language post.
The Cuban president also thanked China for its support of Cuba, describing the relationship as one grounded in cooperation and solidarity.
“We express our gratitude for the steadfast solidarity with Cuba, grounded in mutual cooperation and solidarity,” he wrote in the translated post.
66 Years of Diplomatic Relations
Cuba and China established diplomatic relations in 1960. On September 28, China’s Foreign Ministry marked the 66th anniversary of those ties and said the relationship had continued to develop under the leadership of Xi and Díaz-Canel.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China would continue supporting Cuba’s chosen development path and its stated positions on sovereignty and external interference.
Those comments reflected Beijing’s characterization of the bilateral relationship and came only days before Díaz-Canel’s anniversary message.

High-Level Relationship
The two governments have maintained regular high-level political exchanges.
Díaz-Canel visited China in September 2025, when he met Xi in Beijing. During that visit, the two leaders discussed expanding bilateral cooperation and issued a joint statement on accelerating what their governments call a China-Cuba community with a shared future.
The joint statement outlined cooperation across multiple areas and reaffirmed political positions supported by both governments.
Cuba was the first country in the Western Hemisphere to establish diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, a point repeatedly highlighted by Chinese officials when discussing the relationship.
Cooperation Beyond Diplomacy
The relationship has extended into development cooperation and international coordination.
During Díaz-Canel’s 2025 visit, the two sides said they intended to advance cooperation while strengthening coordination in international forums. Xi also said China would continue providing assistance and support to Cuba within its capabilities.
The governments have promoted cooperation under several bilateral and multilateral initiatives, while Cuba has consistently supported Beijing’s one-China policy.
A Message of Continued Alignment
Díaz-Canel’s October 1 message was brief, but its timing placed it alongside two anniversaries central to Beijing and Havana: the founding of the People’s Republic of China and more than six decades of formal Cuba-China relations.
His remarks also reinforced the Cuban government’s public emphasis on China as an important diplomatic and development partner.
As the two countries enter their 67th year of diplomatic relations, both governments continue to publicly frame their relationship around political support, cooperation and coordination on international issues.
