Obama Presidential Center Opening Will Bring Museum, Library, and Community Spaces to Chicago

CHICAGO — Former U.S. President Barack Obama announced that the long-awaited Obama Presidential Center will officially open to the public on June 19, 2026.

In a social media post shared Wednesday morning, Obama said he and former First Lady Michelle Obama are looking forward to welcoming visitors to the new cultural and community landmark in Chicago.

“Michelle and I can’t wait for you to visit the Obama Presidential Center!” Obama wrote.

According to the announcement, visitors will have access to the Center’s museum and several public community spaces, including:

  • A new branch of the Chicago Public Library
  • A public reading room
  • A two-acre playground
  • A fruit and vegetable garden
  • Additional outdoor gathering areas

The opening date of June 19 aligns with Juneteenth, the U.S. federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, adding additional cultural significance to the launch.

The Obama Foundation has described the Presidential Center as more than a traditional presidential library, positioning it as a hub for civic engagement, leadership development, and community programming.

Tickets for opening visits are now available through the Obama Presidential Center website.
