Ethiopia Expands Domestic Aviation Network with New Negele Borena Geda Airport

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – Ethiopia has expanded its domestic aviation infrastructure with the official inauguration of the new Negele Borena Geda Airport, a development the government says will strengthen regional connectivity, trade, and tourism.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the opening on Wednesday, describing the airport as a major investment in economic growth and transportation access.

The new airport becomes the 24th domestic destination served by Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest airline carrier.

“Today, we officially inaugurate the new Negele Borena Geda Airport, and Ethiopian Airlines’ 24th domestic destination,” Abiy stated in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Built for Modern Aircraft and Regional Growth

According to the Prime Minister, the airport has been constructed to accommodate advanced aircraft, including the Boeing 737 Max, positioning the facility to support increased passenger movement and future expansion.

Ethiopian Airlines is expected to begin operating three weekly flights to the destination immediately.

Abiy said the new route is intended to stimulate:

• Local commerce
• Cross-border trade
• Tourism development
• Regional economic activity

“Every new runway we build bridges a gap, unlocks regional economic potential, and brings our people closer together,” the Prime Minister said.

Ethiopian Airlines Marks 80 Years

The airport expansion comes as Ethiopian Airlines celebrates its 80th anniversary, a milestone Abiy referenced while praising the airline’s role in African aviation.

“Our national flag carrier and pride of Africa now in its 80th year is indeed ‘The New Spirit of Africa!’” he added.

Ethiopian Airlines has continued expanding both its domestic and international footprint, strengthening Addis Ababa’s position as one of Africa’s major aviation hubs.

Infrastructure and Connectivity Strategy

The opening of Negele Borena Geda Airport reflects Ethiopia’s broader infrastructure and transportation strategy aimed at improving national connectivity and supporting economic integration across regions.

Officials believe improved air access could encourage increased business activity and tourism while creating stronger links between communities and markets.
