Mia Mottley and Claudia Sheinbaum discussed tourism, sustainable development, and stronger Caribbean-Mexico relations during a recent call.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have held discussions aimed at strengthening relations between Barbados, Mexico, and the wider Caribbean region, highlighting opportunities for cooperation in tourism, sustainable development, and regional partnership.

Strengthening Barbados-Mexico Relations

In a statement following the June 16 conversation, Mottley described Sheinbaum as “a scientist and a leader whose fortitude and clarity of purpose are being felt well beyond Mexico’s borders.”

The Prime Minister said the leaders spoke candidly about the future of their nations and the broader region.

“There is something powerful when leaders of our hemisphere can speak frankly about the future of our people, our region and our shared responsibility in this moment,” Mottley said.

According to the Barbadian leader, the discussion focused on strengthening bilateral ties between Barbados and Mexico while exploring new opportunities for cooperation.

Focus on Tourism and Sustainable Development

Among the areas discussed were tourism, sustainable development, and equitable growth.

Both countries have been active advocates for sustainable development initiatives, particularly as Caribbean and Latin American nations continue to navigate climate-related challenges, economic recovery efforts, and evolving global trade conditions.

Mexican officials also confirmed the conversation, noting a shared interest in expanding cooperation between Mexico and Caribbean nations.

A Broader Caribbean-CARICOM Opportunity

The discussion extended beyond Barbados, reflecting the growing importance of stronger engagement between Mexico and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Regional leaders have increasingly emphasized collaboration on issues such as climate resilience, economic development, food security, energy transition, and tourism connectivity.

The call signals continued interest in building closer ties between Latin America and the Caribbean at a time when regional partnerships are becoming increasingly important to addressing shared challenges and opportunities.

Choosing Dialogue and Partnership

Mottley stressed the value of cooperation and diplomacy in an increasingly divided world.

“In a world too often pulled apart by division, Latin America and the Caribbean must keep choosing dialogue, respect, partnership and a rules-based international order that works for all our people.”

While no specific agreements were announced following the call, the conversation underscores the commitment of both leaders to strengthening regional cooperation and fostering closer ties between Mexico and Caribbean nations.

As Barbados continues to play a leading role within CARICOM and Mexico expands its engagement across the Caribbean, such discussions may help lay the foundation for future collaboration in key sectors that benefit the wider region.
