KINGSTON, JAMAICA — Jamaica is reflecting on the life and contributions of former Prime Minister Edward Seaga as the country marks what would have been his 96th birthday.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness paid tribute to Seaga in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), describing the late statesman as a transformational figure who helped shape Jamaica’s political, economic, and cultural identity.
“Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of The Most Honourable Edward Seaga, Jamaica’s fifth Prime Minister, on what would have been his 96th birthday,” Holness stated.
Seaga, who served as Jamaica’s Prime Minister from 1980 to 1989, remains one of the country’s most influential political leaders. During his decades in public life, he played a significant role in national development and policy reform while also championing Jamaican culture and heritage.
A Lasting Political and Economic Influence
Holness noted that Seaga devoted his life to public service and made major contributions to Jamaica’s growth and modernization.
“Edward Seaga devoted his life to the service of Jamaica and played a significant role in shaping our nation’s political, economic, and cultural development,” the Prime Minister said.
Seaga’s political career spanned several decades and included leadership roles that influenced economic policy, urban development, and national governance.

Beyond politics, Seaga was widely recognized for his commitment to preserving and promoting Jamaican culture.
Holness highlighted Seaga’s passion for Jamaican music and heritage, noting that his efforts helped strengthen the international identity of “Brand Jamaica.”
“Beyond public service, he was deeply passionate about Jamaican culture, music, and heritage, helping to preserve and promote the richness of Brand Jamaica to the world,” Holness added.
Seaga was known for his support of reggae music and his academic interest in Jamaican folk traditions, which contributed to greater international recognition of the island’s cultural influence.
Remembering a Nation Builder
As Jamaica commemorates Seaga’s legacy, Holness said the country continues to draw inspiration from his dedication to national development.
“As we honour his memory today, we acknowledge his tremendous contribution to our country and continue to draw inspiration from his dedication to nation-building,” the Prime Minister stated.
Seaga passed away in 2019 at the age of 89. His influence continues to be felt across Jamaica’s political, economic, and cultural landscape.
“May his legacy continue to live on in the heart of our nation,” Holness concluded.
